Gastrointestinal problems in dogs

A lot of people worry that when they switch over to a raw food diet for dogshttp://rawdietfordogsreview.com/7-tips-for-switching-to-a-raw-diet-for-dogs/ that it will cause stomach upsets. It does take a little while for the dog to adjust to a new diet so changing over to a raw diet for dogs gradually is often better.

Once the dog adjusts to the raw diet, for dogs their stools tend to be smaller and less smelly than on a processed diet. Some dogs do have some detox problems changing to a raw diet. However, it is important to be aware of the type of digestive problems dogs can get, no matter what type of diet they are on.  This is a good video by a vet that explains the different types of problem that can upset a dogs digestion and what to do about it.

Good food hygiene & raw dog food diets

Many people worry about the cleanliness of raw food after it's been put in the dogs bowl. Of course if you leave it out in the heat for hours and the flies get to it, then you'll have problems and your dog could get sick from it, the same as it could from other spoiled food.

Keeping the dogs eating dishes well cleaned and the food in the right conditions is important doggy hygiene. Wash your hands before preparing food. Use clean knives and boards.  Keep the food  refrigerated until serving time.

How to make raw dog food at home

So what do you include in a natural diet for dogs? Well, it's not just meat. While the raw meat is probably the first thing you think of when you think raw dog food, dogs also benefit from eating fruit and vegetables. The vegetables add fiber and vitamins and minerals. The fiber is great for the dogs digestive system and helps to move food through quicker and easier. You find that many dogs have smaller and less smelly stools once they adjust to a raw diet.

Fruit is filled with anti-oxidents and micro nutrients. These help the immune system and are thought to help with ageing and memory. My dog Jilly loved apples! we have two big apple trees in our backyard and she would happily lie under the apple tree munching on the fallen fruit. When she died I decided to bury her under those apple trees where she had spent many happy time over the years.

But I digress!

The raw diet will include a range of foods. I found this great video which shows how one woman prepares the raw food for her dogs from scratch. It's a good example of what this type of diet looks like

How I got interested in raw dog food diets

At the moment I don't have a dog. My dear old kelpie, Jilly passed away a few months ago. She was nearly 18 years old and had been a real friend to me through some tough times.  I miss her all the time and I'm just not ready for another dog yet. We're are also having to travel away from home a lot due to family issues so I don't have the time needed to train and settle in a new puppy. One day I will though :)

But, Jilly is the reason I got interested in a this stuff.  When she started getting sick I started reading up on natural health for dogs. I came across the raw diet and tried it out. I think I left it much too late though.  She did have some difficulties adjusting but eventually we got her diet all changed over to raw foods. I am sure that it helped her arthritic problems and her coat was lovely. Anyway thats just a bit of an intro about my background.
